Current Affairs in the United States: Coalitions and Conflict Series

Europe and the United States in the Shadow of War

Michael Kimmage, the fall 2024 Richard C. Holbrooke Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, traces the origins of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 back to 2008, when war was not predestined. Kimmage is a professor of history at The Catholic University of America, a senior non-resident associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and one of the most prominent American commentators on the war in Ukraine. His talk provides a thorough historical context for Russia’s evolving antagonism toward Ukraine and its growing tensions with Europe and the United States. As the war enters its third year, Kimmage addresses its far-reaching impact on Europe and the transatlantic relationship, in discussion with Oleksii Makeiev, Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany and Barbara Lippert, Director of Research, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP). Moderated by Ann-Dorit Boy, from Der Spiegel, the panel will consider how the 2024 US presidential election and European decisions on Ukraine’s status will intersect; take stock of German policy debates on the course of the war and the proper strategic approach to Russia; and suggest how best to integrate Ukraine into “institutional Europe.”
